Mom's crab apple jelly and the crab apple tree which creates the crab apples
that make it! Phew...bit of a crab apple overdose, but we like saying it.
However, we enjoy eating it much more, we have it on warm,
buttered toast, mmmmm.

Sometimes, even though it's wrong, it's fun to be naughty. Or cheeky. Or mischievous. As long as no real harm comes to anyone and nobody gets put in jail, go and feel the good kind of guilt. The kind where you keep giggling until your stomach hurts and you almost want to get told off. Please don't tell us off though. We promise to be good next blog! Yes, yes...we've learnt our lesson.

If a little of what you fancy does you good, then does a big chunk of what you fancy do you extra good? It tends to make us extra chubby, but also extra smiley which is no bad thing. There's also more of us to love. So if you're worrying about another slice of lemon drizzle cake or an extra scoop of ice cream, then stop worrying and just bloody have it! If you're pondering it you obviously want it. Go on, you know you want it. If it gets to the stage where you're not allowed on rollercoasters, or have to buy two seats on the plane, then maybe a moment to re-consider is understandable. But we do not want to judge, just encourage. Nourish your senses and indulge.

Some people are like fireworks. They explode into your life, creating beautiful, entertaining displays. They make you excitedly smile and gasp. They light up your universe in the most colourful of ways and you come away from them glowing. Always a little sad to leave them, as the show is over, you know the next instalment will be just as wonderful if not more so than the last. And you love them because they are a special occassion. How lucky we are to have these fireworks in our lives.

Sorry it's been soooooo long! We got lost in a giant black forest gateau and have been eating our way out for weeks. Feeling a little bloated, we won't be going near chocolate or cherries for a while. Anywho, how are y'all? How's the family? We've heard the weather's been a bit ropey, maybe it's a good thing we were stuck in a cake so long. We're feeling quite free though now. Like when you take your socks off, or your swimming goggles, or you know when you wake up and stretch? Like that. We will be writing soon...in a while pretty smile.

Don't you love those moments we have just to ourselves? Where it's impossible to do anything work or stress related, and everything-else can be blocked out. Like train journeys. Where all you have is a jam sandwich to enjoy or your ipod to listen to. You've forgotten your work, so you cant do anything other than exactly what you really want to do and not what you should or need to do. Why? Because you're on a train remember! Or smaller moments. Like today, at the hand dryer. We had washed our hands, and were at the hand dryer, drying our hands, thinking this is wonderful! There's nothing else we can do now but dry our hands, so for approximately two minutes we could daydream to ourselves, guilt free. I think it's what benches were made for...but more of that another time.
It's important to have these totally self-indulgent, guilt-free moments. Whatever or wherever they are, you can be you. Think, say, write, read, eat, do whatever you please. Even if it's only briefly whilst drying your hands. We thought about what to eat for our dinner and to remember to re-tell you all these thoughts (we had tomato and basil soup and toast followed by two fondant fancies by the way).

We were given some of these delights a couple of weeks ago and meant to tell you sooner. But seriously, kids, eat these! You get a beautiful box filled with something so pretty, that for a second you question whether or not to devour them! But they're so delicious looking that you find yourself biting and smiling at the same time. Our eyes were enchanted, our taste-buds were elated and our stomach overjoyed. Thank you i love cake. We love it when we find things that we think have been made for one-another, like today when we had a coconut and raspberry cake square. We've had one before, but today sat and thought, god, this is goooood. Cheese and marmite, cold feet and microwaved socks, crumbles and custard, cheeky smiles and winks, pencil crayons, paper and long afternoons, faces and loving kisses...you get the jist. This list is endless! We also love lists, if somebody says make a list of, well, whatever really, we get a bit fidgety with excitment. We were made for list making. Well, simple things and all that.

Excitement is great is it not? Teeth grittingly, cheek achingly, arm snappingly, foot tappingly exciting! When your stomach is having a party and your knees keep bending. Wonderfulness no? We love excitement. Love it.

Have you noticed how all the shops are starting to fill up with red hearts and chocolate of the romantic variety? Yes, valentines is on it's way. Great for some, miserable to others and indifferent to many. If somebody decides to give you a little piece of their heart, through a message in a card, a meal or a kiss, please cherish it! They are not expecting it back, they are giving it away...to you! Isn't it funny how strong the heart is, yet how easily it can break. Anywho, it's important to take care of everyones heart (in a metaphorical way - not in a flora spread keeps your heart healthy sort of way, although that too is important, however we promote the consumption of cakes so feel it's unsuitable to lecture on healthy eating). And even if your heart doesn't beat a little bit faster for the one whose heart you make sing, be kind and cherish the gesture anyway. Love keeps the world going round, along with all the joy and pain that goes with it. So get out there and show some affection because everybody needs it (we are not promoting promiscuity). We promise the next blog will contain atleast 75% less mush! Lots of love XXX

Don't you think wondering around and getting lost within a city of tall buildings is a little like being surrounded by a giant advent calender?! There are various doors you could open and behind each one is something different...a surprise. Although, with actual advent calenders the surprise is usually in the form of something chocolatey. This seems a little dull to us now after thinking about all things that could possibley lie behind actual doors. Pleasant things, dangerous items, interesting people...you get the idea. We hope that next year, our advent calender will be made up of actual doors to places we have never visited before, so we get to go somewhere new each day leading up to Christmas! This will also stop us devouring an edible one all at once! We are not recommending breaking and entering though, this could lead to the opening and closing of doors in prison - not very festive.

Ok. So a cup of tea was made. There were no biscuits in the tin. No cake. And the peckishness was overwhelming! There it was...the advent calender. Each pocket filled with a different soft centred chocolate. Each one peeking out, basically saying "eat me! pleeease, just eat my chocolatey lovliness!"
And so it happened. And the pockets are empty. And the guilt is bothering us...a lot. Was it worth it?
Yes.

Ok so we've seen the tiny snippet of everyone's favourite Christmas advert for Coke! This to us means it's officially festive time! This sort of excitment makes steam shoot out our ears, steam containing miniture tinsel and bits of glitter. "Just hear those sleigh bells ringing and jing ting tingaling too, come on its lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you!..."

It must be hard being a nose. Don't you think? You'd be stuck out there exposed 24/7, filled with unpleasant things and a target for cold, spots and fast-moving fists! Many noses are criticised constantly - especially by their owners! Surely this would give you a complex no(se)? As you are reading this, take your thumb and give your nose a loving little rub, say thank you to it for giving you an alternative way to breath, for allowing you to smell delicious baking and for staying strong when you shoved popcorn or lego up it as a child (oh...maybe that was just us then). Better yet, get a loved one to give it a little kiss now and then, it will cheer it right up and it might stop running or getting blocked in the winter. How brave your nose is, just sat in the middle of your face sayin' "yeah, I am here. I'm a nose!"

Hello, it's been a little while hasn't it? So what have you been up to? Tried any new cakes of late? We've discovered a new tea and cake place nestled in Nottingham called The Walk. It offers a range of afternoon teas with miniture and full sized cakes/scones and sandwiches included. And guess what? Go on guess...no? OK. They serve cream of the clotted variety with their scones along with locally sourced jams - including rose petal jam, divine. All the little round tables and beautiful chairs are different, and there's an eclectic mix of tea cups, tea pots and cake stands served by pretty girls with red lipstick and bows in their hair. We ended up wondering if infact we were daydreaming as this is very often a scene we picture. There is also the option of a champagne afternoon tea which we will be indulging in tomorrow as it is a bit of a special day. We will be taking photos, so further wittering about our new favourite place is to be expected.
We would also love to thank all those involved in a wonderful weekend of celebrations last weekend. We danced and laughed and had a very jolly couple of days. We were told if we were a gladiator (one of the ones off the T.V. not of the Russell Crowe variety), we would be named the Tickler, due to our non-violent but surprise tickle attacks. The more we think about this name, the more we wonder if it sounds cute or infact quite creepy. Hmmmm. Anywho, when arriving home we got quite upset that it was all over and we had picked up a cold on the train. Hankies all round. Then we remembered something mom had told us....don't be sad that it's ended, be happy that it happened! How true. Just wish it could have kept going a little bit longer!
So, keep smiling, eating cake and spending time with those who make your cheeks (on your face) ache from laughter! XXX
This blog is dedicated to D.P. - an unexpected fan of our blogging (he's not dead by the way...it's just a thank you for reading sort of thing).

"I like conversations that last for hours and hours, full of jokes about singing bees and talking flowers. I like it when they take up whole mornings and fill up whole nights. When they mention books and cocktails and trumpets and kites. I like them when they talk about parties and talk about dreams, and talk about cakes covered in cream. And all that they need is me and a friend, and the talking to go on and never to end."

Still feeling quite ropey here at fay-loves-cake, we have taken feeling sorry for ourselves to new levels. To cheer ourselves up we thought we would reminisce about our trip to Switzerland, and so turned to our notebook...
Switzerland is so, so beautiful. On every drive around the hairpin-bends of the mountains our eyes are filled up with trees, rivers and constant postcard-worthy scenery. There is nowhere to look that isn't picturesque! Even though Switzerland is an extremely clean, fresh place, it is not too regimented and retains bucket fulls of character. There is a depth to the landscape and a feeling of magic in the air due to the towering, fairytale trees and ominous looking rocks.
We did ponder as to where the little trolls and fairies that must reside in these magical lands were. We could only imagine that they creep out into the twilight to drink Swiss wine and dance around the Christmas-shaped trees! We have decided that they work throughout the night to build the wooden chalets that are sprinkled about the mountains.
Yes. We are quite taken with Switzerland. The best to way to descibe the drive into these mountainous regions is to say it's like opening a childrens pop-up book, where there is a strong theme, however each page is so intricately different.
There wasn't even snow on our visit, so we are desperate to go back when there is. Infact thinking about it makes us too excited...you know when your body goes all tense and you grit your teeth and your arms might snap off backwards at the elbow? - That sort of excited.
P.S...thank you L.M!

Bonjour readers! We are back from beautiful Switzerland, however we brought home more than chocolate...unfortunately we managed to pick up a nasty cold. We are feeling quite sorry for ourselves at the moment - sad faces all round I'm afraid. Everything is a little bit fuzzy and soft, probably due to the cocktail of cold remedies and painkillers, we've got to the point where we're just mixing whatever we have and cramming it all in (don't try this at home kids!). Drifting in and out of sleep so more blogs will be on the way when zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

If you love what you wear because it reflects you, along with the little quirky touches that really really make it your attire, then keep on wearing it. There have been times where we at fay-loves-cake have been given suggestions to perhaps tone it down, change the colour of our tights or reduce the shineyness and sparkle. It has caused a sub-conscious effort to become a little more bland in order to please others. And of late, we feel this has caused unnecessary misery and frown lines. Basically kids, if somebody tells your clothes to pipe down a bit, then politely tell them to sod off and ignore everything they are saying. If what you wear is an extension of what is inside you then why on earth should you let another take bits away?! (we are still totally pro donor cards!).
Shiney silver moon boots were worn the other week and received plenty of praise and even in-depth discussions (thank you J.L) about their attributes and useful functions when travelling around the moon's surface. These are the ones we should be listening to, the ones who deserve to come in, sit down and drink tea from the posh china! We have decided to always take a moment to appreciate the choices made in regards to an outfit. Stick to those who enjoy what you choose to wear even if they dont like it, and to those who have style you could never pull-off but are a constant inspiration (D.P.M.S).
This rant was brought to you in a state of sleep, tea and cake deprivation. We are off to rectify the situation XXX

We found this tired, poorly looking balloon attatched to a delicious chocolate birthday cake! It didn't say much - just that it's been hungover for weeks and used to be pink. More apologies folks for lack of wittering! It's been one of those weeks where you think it's going to be a quiet one watching T.V. that rots the mind...but then wonderful presents arrive in the shape of people, places and parties! When we have settled down to watch something however, it's been Marie Antoinette...about 8 times in the past few weeks. We cannot stop watching it for a little escapism and the excellent soundtrack. After discovering Bow wow wow and their versions of "fools rush in" and "I want candy", we have an extra spring in our step and wiggle in our dance! It's a late discovery, but we love it! All the cakes, fabric and shoes of Versailles have pocketed themselves in our brain. We are humming the soundtrack as we write. If you haven't seen it, we are giving you a strong recommendation. Anywho, you get the idea.
There have been rumours of more balloon sightings but no pics, so no proof! We did get a note from one pursuing it's journey to fame. It's going to audition for BB10 and Shipwrecked 2009...watch this balloon filled space!

What's with the weather guys?! We don't mind a little rain, but what we cannot abide is weather schizophrenia. Sunshine, rain, bleakness, sun, drizzle...you get the idea. Sunglasses or umbrella (ella ella)? Looks like it's both - just incase. There is something lovely about when the rain stops and we put the brolly away and the shades on though. Suppose we just live for the drama!

Has anybody noticed the similarity between summer flowers and café outdoor furniture? It rains most of spring, then the sun starts to win over more and more, and as if by magic - there are the flowers! And there are the pretty tables and chairs outside cafes, bars and restaurants. Each adorned with happy people enjoying the sunshine, sipping their drinks and nibbling their food. Just as decorative to the city streets as flowers in a garden in our eyes. Especially as peoples choice in colour and print on their clothing is much bolder in these warmer months.
As for the furniture itself, wrought iron or wicker are particular favourites. Put up like flower beds surrounding the buildings. I wonder if somebody planted them in winter? Just like the sound of busy bees in the garden, the hum of chatter and giggling is just as appealing when strolling past. I know it’s a big chain, but Café Rouge’s outdoor furniture is so pleasing, with it’s obviously Parisian - café culture themed aesthetics. It makes us want to sit and order a coffee and have a cigarette each time we walk past. And as a tea loving non-smokers this is quite a feat.
Maybe it is the individuals that decorate each chair that draws us in, we’re not sure. But after reading this we’re sure you’ll see what we’re babbling on about. Those sat alone particularly intrigue us, thinking and daydreaming to themselves. We are always on the look out for thoughts for our thought jam, but you have to be quick to catch them. They don’t often escape the persons mind but when they do, it’s a super quick shot for freedom. We’ve noticed that sometimes, those little thoughts wrap themselves up in steam from a hot drink or cigarette smoke in order to disguise themselves. Anyway, summer’s here so go and sit outside! Decorate the unattractive pavements with…yourself!

Whilst out walking Cookie in Hockley this evening we spotted what we thought was one of the missing balloons...and it was! So we ran over for a chat to see if it wanted to come back home...
Us: Blue balloon! How we've missed your watery hues!
Balloon: (Mischievously) erm...hey, yes I have been off exploring.
Us: Well you didn't get very far, infact you've only made it down the road.
Balloon: But it's been parties, shindigs and merry-making all the way!
Us: Check you out. Ready to come home yet?
Balloon: Don't think so, I've got a BBQ in half an hour.
Us: Nice. We see you're carrying a little thought around with you there ("Free as a lost Balloon..."). Please may we take it for our thought jam?
Balloon: No.
Us: Oh. Well then, see ya! Wouldn't wanna be ya!
Balloon: Smell ya! Shouldn't have to tell ya!
Us: I have a pin in my pocket...
I hope the balloons you find haven't let the freedom over inflate them...it will make them pop eventually.

After popping into the newly opened Coffee Republic in Nottingham, we were absolutely delighted. Their fruity smoothies and chocolatey milkshakes tickled our fancy, however, the lovely use of hearts (a favourite shape at fay-loves-cake) and ribbons with their packaging made us do a little dance of appreciation. They have even gone so far as to use a heart shape and their initials to create their all butter shortbread biscuits - we couldn't resist! Smiles all round...

Here at fay-loves-cake, we love balloons! It usually means there’s a party (which means there will be cake yippee!). We put balloons on lots of our greetings cards. They are all kept in a huge jar in the pantry (third shelf from the top, towards the left), we like to call it the balloon jam - there are loads of other jams - button jam, ribbon jam, thought jam, witty jam, sorry I digress…
Anyway, disaster has struck! Somebody has left the lid off the balloon jam, and balloons being balloons have decided to float off in a bid for freedom or maybe just to have a look round. Either way, the whole jar is lost. So eyes peeled people!
If you come across a fay-loves-cake balloon (see pictures below), then please look at it carefully. Has its escapade turned out well? Is it happy it chose to leave the jar? If this is the case, then let it be and send it our best. Maybe take a photo and let me know how its doing. However, if the balloon in question looks a little distraught as it has realised it’s true desire is to belong on somebody’s card, cheering that person up each time they look at it - then please, send it home!

So this is our first blog! How very exciting. faylovescake.com is in the process (the long, arduous process) of getting up and running , but we thought we’d get the blog going so you can get to know us. We’re thoughtful like that. fay-loves-cake is an ever expanding team of lovely people - both illustrated and the fleshy kind. You’ll get blog posts from all of us, some more than others (there’s a couple of shy ones). It's just to let you all know what we're up to, thinking and sometimes just bits we've seen and fancy wittering about. All comments, opinions and ideas are very welcome. So hey ho, lets go!
